Kat in the Kitchen: Frozen Oreo Dessert

Okay, really, this is Jill in the Kitchen since it is her recipe :)

After Chris and I made it known to each other that we liked each other, we wanted to keep it under wraps as best as possible from his family for a short bit until we were really dating. And nothing says keeping under wraps like Skyping with "a friend" for hours or stepping out to make a quick call that turns into a two hour call. Anyway, Chris would call me when he was out and away from wondering eyes, and one time he called me at the grocery store. He said his mom was going to make his favorite Oreo Dessert since he was home.

I thought about that clandestine memory when I was the one at the grocery store picking up ingredients after Chris requested Oreo Dessert on Memorial Day three years ago. Ryan had been baking in my belly for all of nine weeks, and I checked my phone to see the requested recipe in my inbox even though my mother-in-law probably had a million other pressing things to do. She wrote, "Here it is! Love and miss you three!" That was the first time I cried in a grocery store. Seeing "you three" was just too much for this romantic to handle.

This incredibly rich dessert is a part of many of our family memories. Like that one time I made it as a last hurrah before "eating better." "Eating better" never includes me because I'm always either pregnant or nursing, and even though I should probably eat better ... the cravings win out. David, Becca and Annie were all with us for the summer, and I just could not get rid of my craving for Oreo Dessert. I was going to eat it after Ryan finally went to sleep. It was going to be so good. Once he finally succumbed to slumber, I went down to the freezer, opened it and found ... no Oreo Dessert. I find out through the family-member-vine that Chris had just pilfered it from the freezer and threw it in the sink so it wouldn't be tempting anymore because it is so very tempting. We all know what happens when cravings don't go my way, but you'll never really know if I still ate the parts not touched by the water Chris put in it.

I'm so very thankful to the Texas woman who was supposed to send my mother-in-law a different dessert recipe, but instead she mistakenly sent this one. Enjoy!
-----------
FROZEN OREO DESSERT
1 pckg. Oreo Cookies
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 cup butter
4 squares semi-sweet chocolate
2 cups sugar
1 large can evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream (when we want to go all out, we use cookie dough ice cream)
1 tub whipped topping OR 16 oz whipping cream sweetened with a little sugar and vanilla to taste

Directions:
Layer 1:  Crush and layer Oreos in bottom of 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Drizzle 1/4 cup melted butter over top
Layer 2:  Layer half gallon ice cream over Oreos. If you take your ice cream out before you crush the Oreos and melt the butter, the ice cream should be just soft enough to spread easily.
Layer 3:  In 2 quart pot combine the following ingredients, bring to a boil, turn down and stir almost constantly for 20 minutes:  1/2 cup butter, 4 chocolate squares, evaporated milk, 2 cups sugar.  After turning off pot at the end of 20 minutes, add 1 teaspoon vanilla, stir, and let cool. Be sure to let it cool completely!
After cooled, layer over ice cream.
Layer 4:  Spread whipped cream or Cool Whip over top.

Thanks to all men and women who have died in the armed forces! We are so thankful for your sacrifice, and we are so thankful to my sister, brother, dad, our grandfathers, uncles and cousins for choosing to be in the military. Happy Memorial Day!

  1. I'm eating our family's version of this right now! Except, I use mint chocolate chip icecream and just use a jar of fudge topping rather than making my own. I'll have to try making my own fudge layer though!

  4. Help! Do I save the whipped cream until I'm about to serve, or it is better to freeze with the rest of the dessert? J.J.'s getting this for his birthday since he missed Memorial Day!

    1. Chris' mom freezes it, but we have taken to serving it fresh :) I can't wait to hear what he thinks!
