Lemon Cayenne Tea

I spy Conor.
On Sunday morning before getting ready for Mass (which we learned on Saturday is very, very hard after we spent two hours getting the kids ready and in the car only to arrive too late), Becca plucked some lemons from outside and made her mom's tea. I've said it before, and I will say it so many times again that my brother-in-law's girlfriend, Becca, is a wonder in the kitchen. When she asked if I wanted lemon tea, of course I said yes! You just don't say no to anything made by her unless you want to feel sorry for yourself later because you missed out.

This is the tea that her mom would make when Becca or her siblings were sick. It was the perfect tea to sip on while we geared up for lassoing kids. Sweet citrus with quite a spicy kick. Then on Monday when I started to feel achey, stuffed up, exhausted and my throat was scratchy, I chugged cod liver oil (Chris' mom's trick), gargled with salt water (my mother's trick), and asked Becca to make her mom's lemon tea. Even after mediocre sleep thanks to a teething four month old babe who is regressing his stupendous sleep as quickly as his brother is regressing in potty training, I didn't feel sick when I woke up on Tuesday, just tired.

Becca's Lemon Cayenne Tea

- Juice from one half of a lemon
- 1 cup of boiling water
- honey to taste
- cayenne pepper to taste

Combine and enjoy!

What did your mom make for you when you were sick?

  1. I make this tea but I start out by steeping ginger slices first and then add the lemon, honey and cayenne. Works so well for a sore throat and coughing.

  2. Interesting! My husband has been nursing a throat/congestion /cough thing all week. I'll have to try this out on him :-)

  3. Ooooh, I've never heard of this! Neat! My mom always had me gargle with salt water for anything...I never saw a difference, haha.

  5. I always make this when I'm sick, too! Sometimes I like to add ginger too, like KK said above. Clears those sinuses RIGHT out! Hope you're feeling better & more energetic soon!
