Do you want your kids to smile in a family photo?

Then, pass them off to someone else!

Here I am with my hefty two:
One mama, two side-eyes
And then here is our friend, Kaitlin, this past weekend:
She looks like she could be their mother ... except Ryan is smiling.
Here is our attempt at a family photo with the Chicago skyline (thank you to our friend, Coleman, for snapping the shots and perfectly setting my camera on manual for the first time ever without making me feel like the camera-idiot that I am) ...
Not too shabby, but Conor is still embarrassed to have us as parents

And here are our friends, Tom and Liz, with our baby.
A picture frame family.

I rustled up a bunch of other comparisons, but they all bring the same conclusion: a family photo with everyone smiling is an elusive feat that I'm more-than-okay with never reaching if that means I have little ones around and my husband who just happens to have little patience for photos.

Other family photos here and here. We are good at getting everyone at their happiest angle, no?

  1. Goodness you all are adorable, funny faces and all :) I've pretty much started embracing the hilarious expressions the kids end up making in pictures - who knows what's going on in their heads, but they always look ridiculous! Makes for a better picture, probably :P

  2. Is it weird that I read the title and the first line to the tune of "Do you want to build a snowmannnn"? It is. Okkk then!

  3. Smiling or not, they are both the cutest little things!

  4. I have basically given up on ever trying to get the kid to pay attention in photos. We lucked out on Mother's Day, but most of our family pictures are much more like yours. Such is life!

    PS - yall are adorable.

  5. Haha! So true, although I need to start taking more selfies or something bc the photographic evidence that I exist as their mother is small. When I do get a photo with them, I need it to count!

  6. Smiling or not, that picture on your left sidebar of you with the boys is totally cute. I just love it! The first time I saw it (and each subsequent time since) it's made me smile so much.

  7. But they're such cute shots anyway! And Conor, oh my, cheeeeks!

  8. Katrina, you have a beautiful family and you make me laugh! Writing is your calling in life (other than being a fantastic wife and mother!)
