Brothers, Uncles, Nephews, Non-sharers

I told my mother-in-law that all I wanted this week while she is here taking care of us was for Ryan to learn how to share. Ha.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

Sadly, I seriously thought it could happen. Always an optimist, I guess.

Well! At least I learned something about photographing this group of boys who make you scratch your head when you try and figure out how they are related; the bribing power of tootsie rolls is strong:

Twenty-nine and Twelve Later

Happy Anniversary (a day late) to my in-laws! Last Sunday we were able to go to Mass at the church where Chris' parents were married at the tender ages of nineteen and twenty-one. I bet they had no clue that in twenty-nine years they would be returning to the site of their nuptials with twelve in tow.

Two Line Addresses

Early (really, really early) Saturday morning, Alexandra generously drove Ryan and I to the South Bend airport so we could begin our trip to the big ole state of Texas.  We were spoiled and got to fly down to the giant (tiny) Killeen airport via Atlanta while Chris, David, Annie and Becca drove from South Bend. I definitely delighted in the Biscoff cookie plus of having a kid under two!

Back when Chris and I were engaged lovebirds, my mother-in-law gathered all of the addresses for the groom's side of the invitation list. I looked it over and called to let her know that there were a few parties for whom I didn't have their full addresses. The address given just had their name and then a town in Texas with its zip code. No house number, no street name, no P.O. Box, nothing. "That's the full address," she replied.  That is how small of a town my dear of a mother-in-law is from.

The "town" is one three way stop with one store and the nearest city is 24 miles away with a population of around six thousand.

Oh, it was so fun.

Grandma Pat and Opa would give you their shirts off of their backs and their home reminded me of my growing up. Every thing on the farm has value from the smallest empty spool of thread to the house under the shade of pecan trees.

Ryan played hard all day long with his seemingly endless number of aunts and uncles. As if the roosters weren't already sounding off enough, Ryan had his own crow of "Rooster! Wow! Neat!" He could have spent the entire day outside in the dry dirt speckled with chicken footprints and always looked like a cross between a thrilled Pig Pen and a soot-covered puppy. I kissed the top of his head every night only to get a mouthful of gritty Texas land.

So fun.

Of course, you will be treated with a lengthier recap than this little blog post so hold onto your britches. We are now in Dallas with Chris' dad's side of the family and Harrington Olympics await!
Feast your eyes on my brother-in-law, ladies. The happiest baby in the world.

Vacation isn't complete with a shiner.

7 Quick Takes, Volume 9

Happy Friday, all! This volume of quick takes will mostly be focused on my brother-in-law and my son because Uncle Johnny is visiting, and, well when that happens, it pretty much takes over our life in a very good way. Plus, we are gearing up for a busy weekend so if I don't publish these super, super quick takes right now, I won't at all...like every other weekend.

1. We have always curiously wondered if Ryan would call Johnny, "Uncle Johnny," or, "Johnny." Being my mother's daughter, I heavily favor the uncle option, but, you know, when Uncle Johnny is two years and three months older than Ryan, I'm kind of fighting an extremely steep uphill battle. Don't even get me started thinking about how steep of an uphill the whole, "Uncle Ciaran," battle will be. Eeeeeek. BUT, I do have video evidence that at one point in his life, Ryan declared, "Uncle," to Johnny, and he wasn't surrendering in  a typical strength battle between boys. Click and enjoy the moment with me.

2. And here are Johnny and Ryan in still form rather than high quality video.

3. Life is pretty sweet when you get to swing with your son and your brother, right?

4. From the mouths of babes. Luckily, there is a babe in my belly.

5. This week I finally transported the rest of my blogs to Bloglovin', and I'm enjoying the switch so far! Except that I don't seem to be able to comment on blogs using it from my phone? I always have to open Safari or Chrome in order to actually leave a comment. Anyone know how I can fix that?

6. I also finally updated my social media buttons on the right hand side (full disclosure: I typed and erased "left" twice before I finally got it correct that the right is the right!) so you may peruse, if you would like.

7. And the third finally of the quick takes...I finally made this thing official and created a page on the book. Come say, "Hello!"

Head on over to Jen to read some much more interesting takes.

Nappers.

Ryan and I are currently in California lending a helping hand (or breaking hand in Ryan's case as he has broken three things so far...well, three that I know of) to my in-laws who just welcomed their twelfth baby. I love my sweet, new brother-in-law, Ciaran Joseph. And I love that Ryan has a future playmate for an uncle. Future is a key word since I don't think aggressively patting the baby's face constitutes as playing. No worries, he sprinkles in some wide open mouthed kisses as well.

Today, their nap times synced up and allowed for some uncle and nephew bonding and mother's-heart-melting.

Happy Christmas!

Rejoice, He is born!
Our Christmas card photo...except I never actually sent (or printed) the cards out...

Merry Christmas to you and your family! Or as my nostalgic husband would say, "Happy Christmas!"
Best-in-laws on the planet

We are having a joyful Christmas with Chris' family with no coats on. My first warm weather Christmas! I miss my Ohio family and the amazing celebration at Grandma's, but I am out of this world blessed to have the most welcoming and loving (and fun!) in-laws ever.  I wish everyone could experience big family life.

Love to you all! Enjoy the twelve days of Christmas!

7 Quick Takes (Volume 4)

It is time for some weekly quick takes! Head on over to see Jen to read some more.

- 1 -
Oma and Baby #12. My favorite mother-in-law and favorite sibling-in-law-in-the-womb were in town this week!

Her baby bump is a perfect perch for her favorite grandson. She has been such an angel this week, and we love them so! Doesn't she look amazing?
- 2 -
Just because flowers. Last Friday, I heard Chris' keys as he opened the apartment door and told Ryan, "Go get Daddy!" In walked my husband with these pretty blooms. He sure is great.

- 3 -
My roly poly baby with a rolling pin. This week's toy of choice from the kitchen cabinets is the ever so fun rolling pin. Maybe he likes to pretend that it is a light saber or maybe he is telling me to bake a pie. Or maybe he just likes it. I'm going with the last option.
Check out his tongue sticking out when he is concentrating! Like father, like son.

- 4 -
Baby Memes. I laughed at all of these baby memes on Babble last April and thought they were just as funny this week. Which one is your favorite? My favorites are these two:

- 5 -
Montessori practical life lesson? Ryan has also taken on the broom as his dance partner in the kitchen. Does its novelty mean that I don't sweep enough or is it not novelty, but interest in the work that I do? You decide.

.- 6 -
The Catechism, cedars, and tiny flowers. I am very, very behind on my daily Catechism reading, but last Friday I actually did not skip the email, read the email out loud at breakfast to Ryan (start 'em young, right?), and pleasantly saw this:

340     God wills the interdependence of creatures. The sun and the moon, the cedar and the little flower, the eagle and the sparrow: the spectacle of their countless diversities and inequalities tells us that no creature is self-sufficient. Creatures exist only in dependence on each other, to complete each other, in the service of each other.

Wooohoooo!!!! The cedar and the little flower!

Please send in your advent wreaths! For Advent, I will be featuring Advent wreaths from my readers on the blog. If you would like to submit yours, please send a photo (or photos!) and a little bit about your family's Advent traditions to cedarsandtinyflowers {at} gmail.com. I hope to post one every day starting on through Advent in addition to my regular posts. Can't wait to read about your wreaths!
