What I Wore Sunday

After a long hiatus, I actually was in my Sunday outfit long enough to take a photo so I'm linking up with Fine Linen & Purple for What I Wore Sunday.

Today was a lovely Sunday. We went to Mass, Ryan sang his pronunciation of the Ah-wah (Alleluia) and he also encouraged every person that went up to the pulpit by saying, "Sing it!" After Mass, Ryan and I ate some donuts and then fed the ducks, geese and swans. We got to meet Laura! Everyone, she is just as sweet in person as you would think she is from her blog.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Sunday!

Oxford: Polo Ralph Lauren Outlet. Dress: eBay also seen here (just  hooked it in the back and had the shirt covering the non-stylish pregnancy keyhole back). Shoes: Lauren Ralph Lauren via Marshalls
ETA: I'm hosting a link-up discussing boy and girl pregnancies! Come one, come all!

What I Wore Sunday

Linking up with Jen for the 7 Posts in 7 Days Challenge and with Fine Linen & Purple for What I Wore Sunday

Well, I did end up changing for church because I don't think flannel qualifies as my Sunday best even if it is floral. This Mass was bittersweet because it was our last Sunday Mass at the Basilica with Annie! I can't believe she is almost off to college. Ryan decided to exploit the fact that she is his aunt and has that whole love-a-nephew-no-matter-what concept going on and regressed in his church behavior. Chris took him out three times which was triple last week's count. He was quite vocal in a way only a mother could love and understand. I am the chief translator for his words, so his declarations of, "Jesus!" "Cross!" "Pray!" and "Amen!" sounded pious to me, no matter how ill-timed. Unfortunately, for everyone else they probably sounded like, "Cheezuz!" "Koss!" "Pay!" and "Amy!" and so those high volume and high frequency words warranted the three trips out. People still fumble over the new translation so there is no need for the excessive push for the Ryanglish translation.

The little rascal decided to redeem himself and make our frustrated hearts swell immediately after Mass. He walked up to the holy water, dipped his right hand in once (as opposed to the normal three or five) and proceeded to bless himself with the sign of the cross. And it wasn't his normal disco-dance-move-esque gesture.

Boy knows how to make us crow, "My chick is the blackest!"

He hasn't repeated the perfect sign of the cross since so he also knows how to play his cards right.

Top: Motherhood Maternity. Belt: not too sure. Skirt: Ebay. Wedges: borrowed from Becca

After Mass, we walked over to see the ducks, and Annie whispered so Chris wouldn't hear that I should catch up with Chris and Ryan so she could take a family photo. Ummmm there are probably ten photos of the three of us over eighteen months so you know I scurried away in those borrowed wedges (I don't know why I haven't taken advantage of Becca's amazing size 8.5 shoe collection all summer). Well, I pushed my luck and tried to hold Chris' hand for some added romance to the photos which sent the photo-hater's sister-paparazzi-alarm off ... you can see how Chris thwarted our attempt at family photos and put the whole thing derrière us.

Is it bad that I actually like the photo? ;)

What I Wore Sunday

Linking up with Fine Linen and Purple.

Happy Sunday!

We went to the 5pm Mass today. According to Chris' report, Ryan behaved well again, which was a huge relief because I not only was on the altar for all of Mass, but I read the first reading. If you listened to it, you will remember that it uses the image of a mother comforting her child. Judging from Ryan's reaction to the words "milk" and "nurse" when I was practicing earlier, I was terrified that Ryan would start chanting, "Nurse! Nurse! Nurse!," or "Milk! Milk! Milk!" or do another Meet the Fockers reenactment when he heard his own mother's voice filling up the Basilica and saying those words. Thankfully, Ryan doesn't pay attention to the readings yet. You are off the hook for now, little boy!

I actually wore the same dress that I wore last week, but I switched up the shoes and added a helmet because we biked to Mass as a family for the first time! Ryan was thrilled, and I was just praying that no one saw my Spanx.

My "Can you see my Spanx?" nervous smile

What I Wore For My Sunday Best

Happy Sunday!

We went to the 10am Mass at the Basilica this morning. I'm a broken record, but oh man, do I love going to Mass there. Reverence, full choir, completely packed church, so many priests, incense, everything.

Ryan was very well-behaved considering I wasn't even sitting with him since I was on the altar the whole time, and I only heard him once. Many thanks to  Annie, my sister-in-law, for pitching in and taking over the Ryan-watch when both Chris and I were not in the pew. After Mass, Ryan let all of the pent up-in-the-name-of-being-holy energy out and ran, howled, got dirt on his khakis and tried to fist-bump people all in about thirty seconds. It all culminated in his response when I told him to stand still and  say, "Cheese!"
Who taught this kid the sorority pose?

Enjoy these perfectly exposed photos.

What I Wore for my Sunday Best

Linking up with Fine Linen and Purple for What I Wore Sunday and Camp Patton for Sunday Best.

Happy Sunday!

It is a humid weekend over here. So humid that Ryan's head is 75% curly, which is quite the upgrade from his Oompa Loompa days. (Also - in case any one cares, a google seach for "Oompa Loompa" led a few people here. Ha!) Mass was beautiful, as it always is. Ryan quietly stayed in the pew for 95% of the Mass with only a few stray, "Air-play!" yelps for when he mistook angels for airplanes and "Baby!" exclamations upon seeing a baby which were followed by desperate, squirming attempts to kiss my belly. Although he stayed quiet, he definitely wasn't still and there were quite a few thuds since he hasn't mastered the balance beam of a kneeler yet.

Here are the weekly Harrington feeding animal photos because we pride ourselves on being unpredictable.

Floral top: Motherhood Maternity from ... my mother-in-law. Life is pretty sweet when you swap maternity clothes with your mother-in-law. Skirt and belt: Target clearance rack. Pumps: the normal Lauren Ralph Lauren ones from Marshalls. Bump: 22 weeks.
Thank you to everyone who has prayed for the family of my NFP practitioner, Sarah, who tragically passed away due to complications after delivering her stillborn son.

What I Wore For My Sunday Best

Linking up with Fine Linen and Purple for What I Wore Sunday and Camp Patton for Sunday Best, as usual.

Happy Sunday! Happy Father's Day!

We went to the Vigil Mass last night, and I'm really starting to enjoy being able to pay attention at Mass for a minute at a time rather than ten seconds at a time while being in a pew. And it was the front pew of the side section! Nice to meet you, front pew, I don't think we have met before. Barring a highly possible regression in the toddler mass regression department, I'm just going to soak it all in before the end of October.  Ryan only had to be taken out twice. The first time came after he was a little too curious with a kneeler and gravity won. The next incident was appropriately the number two church exit, if you catch my drift.

I once again looked like a mother with it all together because I forgot Ryan's socks at home. He pushed his shoes off before even Mass started and when faced with a potential tantrum vs. a shoeless son, I was a cowered in front of the rage of the tantrum and assured myself that no shoes is passable under two. Let's hope.

Blouse: Possibly Kohl's a long time ago. Skirt: Ebay. Shoes: Kohl's a long time ago. Sandal tan lines: from last weekend. Baby bump: 21 weeks.

My shoeless boy, forehead bruise, shoe tan lines and all. Go, Mama. He didn't bring the stand mixer wisk attachment to church. Points for that?

Off to eat some pancakes and waffles in celebration of this guy I kind of have a crush on.

What I Wore For My Sunday Best

Linking up with Fine Linen and Purple for What I Wore Sunday and Camp Patton for Sunday Best, as usual.

Happy Sunday!

We went to the 10am Mass at the Basilica this morning, and, get this, Chris only took Ryan out one time for maybe 30 seconds. After Mass, we ran into Fr. Rocca, the rector of the Basilica. I commented that Ryan actually stayed inside for the majority of the mass, and Fr. Rocca turned to Ryan and cheerfully confided, "I saw! Your dad only took you out once today!"

Uhhhhhh.

Stunned silence and then nervous laughs because oh-my-goodness, he must have seen the many, many times Ryan was in the church for maybe one minute. Yikes.

After that moment of parental embarrassment, we took our plump boy to feed the plump campus squirrels with my mom and sister who are in town! My dress is a thrift store find and very typical of my non-maternity maternity preferences; it's stretchy and there is side ruching. Pair it with some maternity Spanx and heels, and you are good to go. Plus, the cap sleeves  were just long enough to cover my sunburn from yesterday's rugby escapades.
My dress - St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store (the brand is American Living so I'm guessing it is from JCPenney originally). Shoes: Lauren Ralph Lauren via Marshall's. Bump: 20 weeks.

What I Wore For My Sunday Best

Happy Sunday!

Linking up with Fine Linen & Purple with WIWS and Grace for her inaugural Sunday Best. You should, too.

Mass today was just beautiful at the Basilica for the feast day. The choir sang Panis Angelicus (which was also sung at our wedding! Chris didn't remember that. Goof.), and Fr. Dailey's homilies are just always so on point and riveting. Ryan's behavior was better than normal although not as good as last week's. We were in the pew for the majority of the Mass although Kate can tell you that there were quite a lot of "Baby!" notifications in the form of a yell. Ryan and Fr. Dailey must have gotten together before Mass to plan Ryan's behavior during the homily. Father read this excerpt from a letter Tolkien wrote to his sons about the Eucharist:

"The only cure for sagging of fainting faith in Communion. Though always Itself, perfect and complete and involate, the Blessed Sacrament does not operate completely and once for all in any of us. Like the act of Faith it must be continuous and grow by exercise. Frequency is of the highest effect. Seven times a week is more nourishing than seven times at intervals. Also, I can recommend this as an exercise (alas! only too easy to find opportunity for): make your communion in circumstances that affront your taste. Choose a snuffling or gabbling priest or a proud and vulgar friar; and a church full of the usual bourgeois crowd, ill-behaved children..."

Right as Father said, "Ill-behaved children," Ryan was in the middle of a trying the twist under the pew move all while shrieking. So there you go, fellow Basilica Mass goers of today! We helped you follow JRR Tolkien's advice.

After Mass, we saw Ryan Gosling II, this time in cuter form as we found much younger goslings than last week.

And now for my Sunday Best and Ryan's not-so-best:
Dress: Polo Ralph Lauren Outlet. Shoes: JCPenney, mega-clearance!

The rest of Sunday was lovely because I got to spend the early afternoon with the ladies from Be Merry, Kate and Fabrics and Fun at a BBQ here in town. Thank you again, and thank you, Monica, for letting me crash the party!

THEN I got to come home and watch my brothers-in-law play rugby on NBC for the USA Sevens Collegiate Championship. An NBC Sports reporter interviewed my father-in-law since he had two sons playing, and when Ryan saw him on the TV he said, "Papa!" and, "Patr!" for Patrick, my other brother-in-law who was sitting next to my father-in-law. Well done to David and the rest of the ND rugby team, and congratulations to Brad, National Champion!!!

I hope you had a wonderful Sunday. Head on over to visit FLAP and Grace, pretty please.

What I Wore Sunday with Ryan Gosling and Firmoo

Happy Sunday!

We had our own little Mass miracle yesterday when our little rascal allowed us to stay inside the Basilica for 97% of the Mass. I'm still floored. He only had to be taken out three times for probably less than a minute at a time. Once for yelling quite loudly, "May! May! May!" (Mary) at the  stained glass window, once for just being Ryan (read: loud), and once for exclaiming, "Da-da! Da-da!" when Chris went up to the altar. I almost didn't know even know what to do with myself! This behavior may have occurred because Becca, my brother-in-law's girlfriend came with us, and if it is...Becca, you are never not coming to Mass with us again. (half-joking ... )

After Mass, we stopped by the grotto and then the lake to see the geese and ducks. The little goslings that Chris used to see waddling around behind their mother goose are now teenage goslings although they aren't as skinny as Alan in Remember the Titans. Ryan enjoyed staring at them, and I enjoyed the fact that a scene of Ryan (and) Gosling(s) was in front of me.

These photos actually are from today even though we went to Mass yesterday because 1) I failed to take a photo yesterday and 2) when I find an outfit that fits and somehow evades the avocado hands that run amok around here on the first day, you can bet I will wear it again the next day.
Maxi Skirt: Family Dollar. Wedges: Kohl's ages ago. Blouse: J. Crew Factory Store. Glasses: Firmoo.

When I was in college, I would sometimes wear my glasses while studying in busy places even though I didn't need them to see up close because I had this weird notion that they kind of transformed me into a girl who could endlessly focus. Glasses = over the counter concentration meds. Ha! I wasn't fooling anyone. Well, now I have a new pair that I maybe I can attempt to use to force myself to focus on reading the board book of the day.

The kind people at Firmoo generously offered me a prescription pair of glasses in exchange for a review. I had a hard time choosing from all of the choices, but I ended up choosing these frames in black matte, and I am very pleased! I couldn't go for the glasses that everyone else seems to be wearing these days because I just can't turn my back on the childhood Katrina who constantly and annoyingly asked my practical dad why he wore his issued glasses (duh...they were free). The frames I chose are a bit wider on my face than I was expecting, but I didn't take advantage of the Virtual Try-On System, which was silly on my part. Nevertheless, I still really like the style, and I am very happy with how they hold up against Ryan's curious hands.

Firmoo offers a first-pair-free-program where you only pay for shipping! What pair would you choose?

As a bonus, Firmoo is offering a 30% off coupon code to my readers! The coupon code is valid for one month and is not valid on the designer frames. Just enter FLOWERSBLOGE2 at the checkout. Enjoy!

You can check out Tess, Martha, Grace, Ana and Christy for other Firmoo reviews.

What I Wore Sunday, Volume 9

After almost a month away from What I Wore Sunday over at Fine Linen & Purple, I am bumping my way back in.

When we finally decided to get ready for Mass at 9:35am (we were going to 10am), I really had an easy time picking out what to wear because my clothes fell into two categories: ridiculously wrinkled and passable with the majority of them falling into the first group. I slipped on this purple dress, was a bit confused as to why it looked like a high-low dress even though I knew I had never forked money over for that trend.

"I think this might have shrunk!" I wondered aloud, obviously without a clue.

That accusation sent Chris into quite the peel(s) of laughter. Because you know...I'm pregnant. Oops, I forgot, too!

Mass included a needed time to pray for all those who suffered this week with a lot of rambunctious Ryan sprinkled in there including his first jump (as in both feet left the ground even if it probably was only a centimeter vertical). Too bad it was in the middle of the aisle. I think that explains why we split our time between outside the sacristy and inside the church.

No, I didn't take my jacket off because I turn into a wimp when it is 30 something degrees in April even though that is balmy in January. Dress: Cynthia Rowley via Marshalls. Cardigan: Gap. Jacket: Forever XXI years ago. Pumps: the usual.

Happy Easter!

The happiest of Easters to all of you! We are so eternally grateful.

We had quite the splendid Easter despite the gray weather that tried to complete with our obnoxiously bright Easter attire. After driving to Detroit for Chris' rugby game, (on 8 Mile Road and where we discovered the most secure McDonalds ever...as in bullet proof glass separating the cashiers and cooking area from everywhere else). Then we drove down to southeastern Ohio to see my extended family.

At Easter Mass this morning, we had a loud toddler who took my announcement that we could  joyously say, "Alleluia!" quite literally although his little mouth didn't exactly master all of those vowels. We went to Mass at the church that my grandma and most of my extended family goes to, but you would think that only my extended family goes there because my three cousins were the servers, my aunt and cousin were the readers and my uncles were ushers. And if you have uncles who are ushers and you are sitting in the very back pew of the church thanks to your exuberant son whose behavior included trying to make a man's foot a chair while the man was kneeling, you can somehow find yourself carrying the gifts up looking like you have everything together....except that the only one that had it together was my sister who carried the hosts. Chris carried a basket with the donations and a Ryan with only shoe while I brought up the wine and Ryan's rogue shoe. It was one of those classic moments when about ten things happen at once and you just go with it...these moments always happen to me so I guess I should say common rather than classic.

We got back to my grandma's for a delicious breakfast, lunch and Easter egg hunt during which Ryan either played with gravel  or had Cadbury mini egg juice dripping out of his mouth. I think it's safe to say we have another year before Ryan cares about the hunt. And I'll say this many more times in the existence of this blog, but I love being part of a family where a gathering of 50 family members is just a sampling of the whole clan. Big families are something special...thanks, Grandma!

On to some photos!
Me: Cardigan  from a yard sale years ago, blouse borrowed from my sister, skirt from Forever XXI from while ago as well, pumps Lauren Ralph Lauren via Marshall's. Family photo: No, Chris didn't wear this outfit to Easter Mass; he just isn't fifteen months old, has a mind of his own and changed pre-photo.
Went for the dressy bow-tie with the casual untucked shirt with a pair of cords because if you can't get away with an untucked shirt at fifteen months, then when can you? Hat: Zara, Shirt: Once Upon a Child, Shoe and cords: the ones he wears in every photo, purple polka dot bow tie: my sewing machine.

What I Wore Sunday, Volume 8

Palm Sunday!

It was an exciting Palm Sunday Vigil Mass for us because it was Chris' birthday (yay!), my mother-in-law, brother-in-law and his girlfriend, my parents and my sister were in town (yay again!) and Chris volunteered me to be a lector without me knowing until Friday (whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?). He was lucky it was his birthday. Ha! It actually was for the better because if I had known about it earlier, I would only have fretted about it more. And that would not have been pretty. Ryan was in quite a mood as I was getting ready. We are talking full-on tantrum throwing because I had to pull on my tights (that actually fit this time!) instead of read him a book. Uuuugh. I wanted to be extra, extra conscious of the neckline of whatever I wore so I chose my favorite red dress that I knew I would be safe in. Then I couldn't seem to remember if we were going to have an outdoor procession and if I would freeze my bottom off so on came a blazer! Not the hippest of outfits, but it reminded me of my working days. I definitely wasn't very caring about how I looked besides it being reverent and holy because I was so nervous about reading since I hadn't been a lector in eight months!

When I left Ryan with my mom so I could go into the sacristy, he lost it. Ugh again. I just politely smiled to everyone as it was obvious that that was my child letting everyone know that his mama was leaving him.  My mind was going crazy because I was sooooo nervous. I started second guessing in my head that St. Paul had written to the Philippians and that the lectionary would say, "A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians," and that I might have to resort to, "A reading from the Book of Philippians." Yeah, none of that makes sense. Yikes.

The second reading came up and I stepped up to the pulpit. "A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians," was kindly on the lectionary (duh) and I was surprisingly able to read it aloud without stammering.

"Mama!"

Oooooooh I had to try soooooo hard to not smile when I heard that. Somehow, I kept my composure. Maybe St. Paul was praying for me?

The rest of the Mass went well without any tripping and I was able to focus because, hey, I was on the altar and not chasing Ryan around. I actually enjoy listening to the Passion, but I don't know if I will feel the same way once I have to chase Ryan around while trying to listen. Last year, he couldn't move.

Since you got through the longest WIWS ever, here are the outfits!
Dress from Nine West via TJ Maxx, regular heels, black tights and my blazer is...get this...from JCPenney from my freshman year in high school! Best Youth in Government investment that was probably $15
I guess Ryan lost it again when Chris handed Ryan off to my mom when he had to serve as a Eucharistic Minister so he cried himself to sleep. :( Thank you, Mom for taking him!!

What I Wore Sunday, Volume 7

Did everyone get to read Michela's great reflection on Fine Linen and Purple this morning? We go back way to the second grade, and I loved reading her Lenten reflection. The Gospel is definitely one of my favorites. Two more weeks!

This weekend's outfit was a quick cheat sheet outfit since I got home really close to the time we were supposed to leave for Mass so Chris would be on time. Apparently all of Michiana decides to shop and run errands on Saturday afternoons which equals way too much in a normal-sized city. Hmph. So I threw on a dress rather than try to figure out what clean top went with whatever skirts that were ironed. I accidentally grabbed some tights that were from pre-Ryan days and every time I sat down, I could feel that demoralizing slow roll of too tight tights feeling like sausage casing. I should probably try on all of my tights to see which ones fit, but that really sounds like the least fun activity in the world, doesn't it?

Ryan's behavior can be described with one word: LOUDEST CHILD IN THE WORLD. Oops, that was five. Chris had to take him out during the first reading and for the rest of the Mass, I could hear Ryan exuberantly chanting, "DA-DA! DA-DA! DA-DA!" like he hadn't seen Chris in a week. The babe loves his dad.
1. How creepy I look when I ask for Ryan to get in the photo with me.  2. No dice. Solo photo!
Dress: Old Navy $6 find by my sister! Tights: gone Shoes: Lauren Ralph Lauren via Marshalls Belt: the usual

Shoes and cords: the usual, Oxford: The Children's Place Outlet, Sweater vest: Once Upon a Child, Cookie in mouth and hand: Miss Becca

What I Wore Sunday, Volume 6

Today we ventured to another church where babbling kids are aplenty and Ryan was only taken out by Chris three times, I think? We also left the house at 8:59 for a 9am Mass (insert Daylight Savings Time curse here), but still made it in time for the first reading. I am on a roll.

Mama...
Blouse and skirt: Target on cleeeeaaarance! Tights and belt: don't know! Shoes: Nine West Outlet as usual

Ryan: Shirt: Carter's, Sweater: Children's Place (their stuff is always sized waaaay too big), Shoes: Target
His smudges on his shirt are from here:
One eyebrow raise, icing on his noise, sprinkles on his chin and a sweater that fits him just right.

Aaaand Chris just informed me that I still have icing on my lips an hour post-donuts. Like mother, like son?

What I Wore Sunday, Volume 5

Chris was at a retreat this weekend so it was just Ryan and me for the normal Mass party. He also took the car since he had to drive other people to the retreat so my wee one and I started Sunday off with a pleasantly brisk walk. And by brisk I mean a comedic skip-jog-speedwalk that included a late mama with her twenty-five pound baby strapped to her chest who were late! for a very important date (with Jesus)! I was gassed halfway there which is so surprising since I am such a stickler with working out. I also realized that there was a very likely possibility that we would miss the Gospel which would deem all of that effort as worthless. And so I sped up. What a picture I must have been to the girls in Walsh and the boys in Sorin. "Sprint to that tree!" I would mentally command myself and in reality I would shuffle-sprint almost there, stumble and resort to a speed-walk til I shuffle-sprinted again. Training for the shuffle sprint while babywearing 5K in Rio, I guess.

Ten minutes after Mass had started, I held my breath as I pulled open the heavy wooden door and heard a girl's voice reading. Yes!!! Not a priest, which means I didn't miss the Gospel! And then the responsorial psalm started and I was so proud that not only had my speed-walking gotten us there in time for the Gospel, but we even made the first reading.

Ryan's church activities today include: mooching off a sweet toddler girl's snacks, kissing a different toddler girl,  trying to hug but really tackling that girl, and hanging out with his friend Caleb.  After we randomly walked into my friend from ND, Karlo, who was visiting friends, we walked home at a leisurely pace taking in campus and loving it. Ryan started to get dangerously close to a nap, and early naps are the worst.  I kept him awake by pretending to be a dog and singing Old MacDonald Had a Farm. So if you are a female student passing by and you hear me woof, meow or moo, no worries, I am not calling you a dog, foxy cat or cow...I'm just trying to keep my son awake.
